As women, we’re familiar with menopause, but there is a recognised awareness gap that men also experience a similar transition. Andropause, also known as manopause or midlife crisis, is a natural part of ageing that affects many males over 40.

The Silent Change

However, while menopause usually marks the onset of these changes in women, there is not one specific physiological event that signifies a change in life for men, as the signs of ageing in males are usually much more subtle and gradual. These may include:

• Low energy and motivation

• Reduced muscle mass and strength.

• Increased body fat, particularly around the midsection

• Mood changes, such as irritability and depression

• Sleep disturbances

• Erectile Dysfunction (E.D.), and urinary issues.

We think of Erectile Dysfunction as a bedroom problem, but it’s actually the most sensitive early warning system in a man’s body for cardiac disease. Why? Because the arteries in the penis are smaller than coronary arteries and this means plaque will restrict blood flow there first. Understanding what’s happening can help you support your partner, or somebody you love, who is going through this transition. Don’t ignore it – get the right tests.

The Risks

Declining strength and testosterone levels can increase the risk of:

• Cardiovascular disease

• Osteoporosis

• Prostate problems

• Diabetes

Why Should Women Care?Andropause can impact self-esteem, relationships, careers, and overall well-being.

The Power of Strength Training

So, what can men do? Lifting weights stimulates testosterone production, helping to maintain muscle mass and strength. It also improves insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Every increase in muscle strength can reduce E.D. risk by as much as 7%. Strong body; strong sex life.

Get Tested, Get MovingWomen should encourage the men in their lives to get their bloods checked annually, including hormone levels and HOMA-IR score to monitor insulin resistance. Early intervention can make a big difference.Hormonal supplementation, a balanced diet and hitting the gym can all help alleviate symptoms and mitigate against the effects of Andropause.

This is the time men need to get into the driver’s seat of their own health. As the saying goes, “Ageing is not for Sissies”.Losing muscle will cause you to lose your health – that’s inevitable. Getting old before your time is not!
